Australia’s first robotic system delivers complex surgery with just one tiny cut

Health Industry Hub | August 13, 2025 |

A Melbourne hospital has become the first in Australia to adopt cutting-edge robotic technology capable of performing complex surgery through just one tiny incision.

Epworth Richmond, a pioneer in robotic surgery since performing the nation’s first procedure in 2003, is again setting the pace with the introduction of the da Vinci Single Port (SP) surgical system, distributed locally by Device Technologies.

Unlike traditional robotic systems, which require four robotic arms entering the body through separate 8mm incisions, the da Vinci SP uses a single 25mm entry point. The telescope and instruments are inserted straight into the body, before unfolding “like snakes” once inside. This design allows the separation needed between the surgical instruments and 3D telescope, enabling a wide range of robotic procedures, including urology, gynaecology, thoracic, cardiac, colorectal, and general surgery.

“Patients may be left with just one small scar, which can often be hidden entirely – through the bellybutton for example – and may experience a faster recovery following surgery,” said Epworth urologist Professor Declan Murphy.

Professor Murphy noted that the single port system could also expand access to robotic surgery for patients whose conditions require operating in confined spaces, such as head and neck cancer surgery via the throat.

“We still see a significant role for multi-port robotic surgery, which continues to allow for precise surgery within the body, but this new single port system offers our surgeons more options to deliver the best outcomes for our patients,” he explained.

Colorectal surgeon, Associate Professor Satish Warrier, welcomed the addition of the single port robot to Epworth Richmond’s fleet of robotic systems.

“It won’t replace other robotic-assisted surgery for all cases, but it plays a role for select patients requiring colon and rectal procedures, which is significant for us as surgeons, but also for our patients,” he said. “With robotic systems, the surgeon is still in control. The robot is an extension of our hand as we are controlling the equipment.”

The technology also marks a significant advance in minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery, offering the ability to treat complex conditions such as extensive endometriosis or large fibroids through a single site. Historically, such cases may have required larger incisions or multiple ports, increasing recovery times and surgical risk.

With Australian approval now granted for the da Vinci SP in gynaecologic procedures, the system opens new opportunities to deliver minimally invasive options to women, particularly in cases that were previously more challenging to manage laparoscopically.
